Early in the year 2019, the Coaching Association of Canada hosted a series of Safe Sport Summits on the development of a universal code of conduct to help prevent and address abuse and harassment. This consultation process culminated in a National Summit in May of that same year. The participants in the national summit having reached a consensus on some general principles, the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport was then mandated by Sport Canada to develop a universal code of conduct.
After several rounds of consultations including stakeholders of the Canadian sport community and experts in prevention of harassment and abuse during the summer of 2019, version 5.1 of the Universal Code of Conduct to Prevent and Address Maltreatment in Sport was endorsed in principle by a majority of federally-funded sport organizations.
Sport Canada announced in January 2020 that all sport organizations funded under the Sport Support Program of Sport Canada will be required to adopt and integrate as part of their conduct rules version 5.1 of the Universal Code of Conduct to Prevent and Address Maltreatment in Sport.
